I have lost the light that elumimnate the gear shift so that I can see in the dark where the  R N D.. etc.

can I change this light myself?  If so, how

Yes, the light can be changed easily by removal of the console.  Radio Shack is the cheapest alternative.  They will sell you two lights for about $300 dollars where the dealer will charge $8 dollars for one.  Remove the console and then access the light socket.  There are two screws on the side and one under the ash tray.
