Nissan Repair: 1995 Nissan Pathfinder, poor gas mileage, cottman transmissions

My 95 Pathfinder won't shift into 3rd gear (automatic) or overdrive. And thus has very poor gas mileage. What could be causing this?

Is the overdrive light flashing?  If this is the case then the computer that monitors the transmission.  I would think the transmission is locked in third to protect itself.  If the transmission shifts from first to second and that is all then you will need the transmission rebuilt as the third and fourth gear are not working.  Check out your local Cottman Transmissions is a good place since I have had good luck and they are reasonable.  The dealer would not be an option as they are really expensive.
