Nissan Repair: Freewheel hub - Axle stub not long enough!, hub axle, circlip

Question
I had to take freewheel hub off to change a ball joint.  Now on replacing it, the axle stub refuses to come through far enough to get the holding circlip on.  It needs to come through about another mm but for the life of me i cant see how it can come any further.  I had this problem before but i cant remember what i did to get around it.
Ideas?

Sounds like the axle is compressed and refuses to come through.  I would disassemble and try again as something is preventing it from coming out enough or it is backwards.  Check it out and email me back.  Also, what year and model is the vehicle...
