Nissan Repair: valve lifters, nissan maxima se, valve lifters

Question
I have a 2002 Nissan Maxima SE about three months ago I began to hear a clicking sound from the engine. I took it to the mechanic and said it was valve lifter. My intention is to fix it as soon as i can but the first mechanic said it would cost bout $1500 to $2000 dollars he said it could run like that with no damage and just to run it on thin oil now i ask another mechanic and he says to run the engine on thicker oil so which oil should i use so it wont sound as loud. are the valve lifters easily accessible once the manifold is off or is it a long tedious task to get to them?

Answer
Eric,

Use Mobile 1 5W30 in the engine and after a couple of oil changes the noise should be reduced or eliminated.  Synthetic will clean the galleries up and that should get oil back to the top end.  Also, the synthetic will aid in lubrication.  Thick oil is only an answer if the rod or main bearings are going.  The cam followers, since it is an over head cam engine are quite difficult to access since the intake and valve covers have to come off as well as the cam gears and chain.  Use the Mobil 1 5W30 and save yourself the trouble.  I use this in all my engines on all four cars and the dune buggy and the generator.  I use what I recommend.
