Nissan Repair: Nissan Frontier 2000 - Tranny will not go in reverse, goes forward in all gears., nissan frontier, nissan cars

Question
When the transmission is in Park Or Neutral the motor will not free rev.  The truck acts like it is still in gear.  The truck was in a front end collision a couple of months ago.  I tried to read the codes for the tranny computer per the chilton's directions.  Nothing comes up.  I was trying to find some info on the Internet to help.  Found a site www.iatn.net, you have probably heard of this anyway.  The tech was asking about a customer's frontier.  She had called the dealer, for the same problem and they said there is a cable that comes off inside the transmission.  They said this happens everytime a Frontier is in a front end collision.  Have you heard of this history, what is the cable they are talking about? Is it possible this is from the wreck.  We have not really driven it much since the accident.  There are some other things that are not working right, since the accident.   So I am wondering if there might be something else that may not be plugged in or came loose.  Is this possible?  Lots of questions, sorry  but this is the only site I can find that has answers that make sense.  Thanks Lynn

Answer
Lynn,

Yes, the transmission is not shifting out of gear due to the wreck.  I would pull the pan and address the shifter problem.  I have seen this before and not only on Nissan cars and trucks.  Pretty esay fix an under $100 bucks if you do it yourself.  Basically, remove the pan and have someone run the vehicle through the gears on the shifter and note what happens.  It should be the shifter in the valve body that is either bent or broken.
