Nissan Repair: where do I start?, neutral safety switch, low beams

Question
Just bought a 95 Maxima GLE (120K) that appears to be in good shape, although both the low-beams have just quit, which seems odd. Really though, my problem is starting. The previous owners told me they just had the ignition switch replaced because it was causing a starting problem, which I've experienced occasionally -- here's what happens: when cranking the engine, the dash lights fade out as if the battery is weak. After it wouldn't start at night recently, I tried turning on the headlights and cranking again, and noticed they did not dim. (!) However, if I turn the steering wheel a bit (90 degrees), the starter will usually catch and the engine starts right up. (when cranking, the starter speed is always fine, not slow) Also, I'm not sure exactly what has been done to the car in terms of maintenance, I'm worried that I'll run up a huge bill if I leave it with a Nissan dealer for a going-over -- any suggestions as to what known problems to check for? Thanks for reading!

Answer
Rob,

It sounds like a neutral safety switch is going out.  Unless the key in the ignition is loose as all can be I would say the neutral safety switch.  I have done a couple of ignitions where the car was an in town driver where the ignition was so loose you could take the key out with it running.  An ignition key cylinder replacement corrected that probalem.  Email me back and let me know what you find.
