Nissan Repair: 96 Maxima 280K Miles: Windshield Wiper Mechanism, windshield wipers, haynes manual

Question
While was driving, windshield wipers ceased functioning.  Had been driving in a snow/ice storm, and ice had built up on wiper blades and in well below windshield; although I cannot say whether this was a contributing factor.
Upon getting home I removed all ice and noticed that I manually could very easily move a wiper arm side to side across the windshield which made both wiper arms move simultaneously, indicating that the two wipers still were connected to one another.  But, the wiper mechanism was disengaged somehow from the drive motor; I had never been able to move the wipers manually in this way before.
When the wiper control stalk on steering column is engaged, a low whirring sound is heard, as if the electric motor is turned on; but the wipers do not move.
Is there a mechanical part that connects the motor to the wiper mechanism that could have become dislodged or broken?  If so how does one get at it?
If not, what else could be the cause of this problem?
I cannot see the wiper motor under the hood.  Is located under the dash?  If so, how does one get at it?
Thank you.

Answer
Victor,

The wiper arm connects to an eccentric arm that is bolted to the wiper motor.  The wiper arm has a clip that holds it to the ball on the end of the eccentric arm.  So, you will need to pop it back on and in some extreme cases the clip is damaged and has to be replaced.  That part would come from Nissan or a wrecking yard.  The wiper motor is under the cowl where you see the wiper arm pivot points.  You will have to take this cowl cover off and to do this the wiper arms have to come off too.  A Haynes Manual is quite helpful for the photographs they have.
