Nissan Repair: 1994 Sentra 1.6 manual tranny noise, mechanic friend, clutch system

Question
QUESTION: 5 speed manual tranny has loud noise in 4th gear.
1st thru 3rd gears are fine. What's up?
ANSWER: you may be low on gear oil.  the easist way to do this is at a garage because its easier on a lift, but you can do this at home too.  secure your car on a ramp, and use jack stands for additional support.  remove the nut that holds your gear oil in your transmission.  to take this out, you will need a 1/2 or 3/4 ratchet drive.  fill with the proper gear oil for your transmission.  it is full when it just starts to leak out.  tighten nut and take a test drive.  (btw, on a lift you would have a more accurate level of gear oil because its level in the transmission).  i hope this will solve your problem.  but if this doesnt, you may want to start shopping for another transmission.  salvage trannys will only cost you about 100-300 dollar and save some money and do it yourself, or pay a mechanic friend and learn how its done in the process.  good luck!!

QUESTION: I've not looked at the tranny yet but now it seems that it is very hard to get into any gear and cannot get it into 4th or 5th without excessive force resulting in very loud noise. Any advice on this?

Answer
ah, it sounds like its time to take apart the transmission.  if your having a hard time changing gears, your springs in the clutch plate may be in pieces.  your throw out bearing may be bad, or your pressure plate.  in any instance, i hate to be the person to bring bad news, but you have to install a new clutch system.  parts will run you about 120-150, and installation is about 5 hours.  i would try the 10 dollar bottle of gear oil before going towards that route...you never know.  these are basically the only options at this point.  make it a Sunday job with some buddies and a cooler, look at the bright side of things.  i hope everything works out for you.  let me know what you find out, keep me updated.  xxp_sebby@yahoo.com

**EDIT** it may also be your syncros in your transmission.   at this point, transmission removal is necessary.  theres a good chance you can get a decent used transmission from a junkyard for about 1-300 dollars...or have it rebuilt for around 600-1k.  if you visibly notice that you have cracked springs on your clutch or there is damage to the pressure plate or throwout bearing, then i would just replace those parts, otherwise its going to be a transmission swap.  best of luck with this job!!  xxp_Sebby@yahoo.com
