Nissan Repair: Is it a vacuum issue, fuel pump filter, air control valve

Question
I have a 87 300zx N/A that I have recently purchased.  The car has an issue with quick acceleration.  Say I'm going 65 in 5th gear on the highway and come up to a car if I very very slowly give it gas it is okay and will pick up speed.  If I try to give it a slightly faster throttle it starts to spit and sputter.  But other than that it runs fine. As long as I do it slowly it has no problem getting up to speed.  I have rehosed the engine compartment with a diagram but the guy that had it before me replaced some vacuum lines under the dash and I don't know if their correct or not, can't find a vac diagram for under the dash. Could that cause my issue? I do have good fuel pressure just replaced the fuel pump, filter, and pressure regulator.  It also kinda sputters when it idles at cold temps but once it warms up it is fine. Please help!!!

Answer
David,

The hoses under the dash should not matter as long as you do not have a vacuum leak.  If you are attempting to accelerate in fifth you need to downshift.  If the car still spits and sputters you need to check the throttle body, throttle position switch and timing.  If the hoses under the hood all line up there should be no problem with the vacuum.  If it sputters and idles rough at low speed and idle you might check the codes to make sure the car does not have a defective sensor.  From a cold start issue you need to check the idle air control valve and the cold start sensor.  Other areas I have seen are original oxygen sensors that should be replaced at 100K miles.  Also, check the fuel filter and replace it if it has not been done as of late.
