Nissan Repair: 97 Altima Whining Noise when I accelerate, shaft bearings, shaft bearing

Question
Von, I have a 97 Nissan Altima 5 gear, when I turn on the car and hit the accelerator the car makes a loud whining noise. I can put the car in gear without any problems and it runs fine, just when I drive it and its on the whining noise is loud when the car is parked and in every gear.  Can you tell me what may be wrong, I am not a mechanic, but I sure would love to know how much this may set me back.

Thanks

Answer
Felix,

Sounds like the input shaft bearing and possible the output shaft bearings in the transmission are work out.  You could get the gear grease changed and see how that does.  But, this transmission is known for the bearings wearing out after about ten years.  The bearings are about $300 bucks and labor is around $1000 due to having to take the transmission out and tear it down and then press off the old bearings and press on new ones and then re-assemble the case and reinstall it in the car.  If it were me and I was doing it I would change the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and input shaft bushing while I was at it and that will add another $300 bucks to the cost. Another option to save money is a wrecking yard transmission.
