Nissan Repair: air conditioning temp wanders, climate control system, nissan 300zx

Hi!
I have an 1986 Nissan 300ZX and the climate control system every once in a while freaks out and starts putting out heat.   I usually turn it off and back on and that temporarily fixes it.
Second thing is that also sometimes in air conditioning mode, all the vents close and there is no air flow (and the fan sound changes).  But then after a while the dampers open and the system starts up with a big whoosh.
Any suggestions to what causes this and how to fix it?

I bet you have the electronic controlled airconditioner?  If you do I would remove the head unit and clean the connections where the harness plugs in.  If that does not do the trick the usual correction is to replace the computer that controls the airconditioner system.
