Nissan Repair: p0500, vehicle speed sensor, nissan frontier 1998

Question
I have a nissan frontier 1998 with a check engine light on. The trouble code the comes up when I use my code reader is p0500. I have replaced the vehicle speed sensor in the manual transmission, but the code came back on with in a few miles of replacement. Is there a second sensor that I am missing some where?

Answer
Hi David,

On standard shift transmissions there is only the output speed sensor. To check it, remove it and plug it in. Spin the gear on the sensor and see if the speedo moves. If it does, then the wiring and sensor are good. But you may want to inspect the harness for places it may have rubbed against the frame and may be causing an intermittent short. Inspect the gear for damage also. If the gear is damaged that would mean the drive gear for the speed sensor in the transmission is damaged also.
