Nissan Repair: Plugs and wires, spark plug gap, mass air flow sensor

Question
Could you please tell me how I can get to my plugs and wires on 95 Nissan Maxima, V6 3000 Twin cam 24V, I can't even see them. My car is backfiring on me when I try to start it, and it will not start.

Thank you,

Answer
Hi Bill,

Yeah, fun stuff! I just looked these up and this will be a walk in the park.

REMOVAL

Remove the intake manifold balance tube. NOTE: The O-rings can be re-used if not damaged upon removal.
Removing Ignition Coils

Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
Remove the ignition coil fasteners and remove the coil.
CAUTION: USE SAFETY GLASSES.

Using compressed air, blow out the area at the base of the spark plug to remove any debris
Using a 16mm (5/8 in.) flex socket and extension, remove the spark plugs (counterclockwise rotation).
INSTALLATION

Using a suitable tool, check and adjust the spark plug gap. Electrode Gap: 1.0 - 1.1 mm (0.039 - 0.043 in.)
Using a suitable rubber hose or designated tool, start the spark plugs by hand (clockwise rotation).
Tighten and torque the spark plugs. Spark Plug Torque: 2.0 - 3.0 kg-m (14 - 22 ft. lbs.)
Apply a small amount of di-electric compound to the inside of the ignition coil boots.
Reinstall the ignition coil and tighten the fasteners.
Reinstall the balance tube and tighten the fasteners.

Hey Bill,

I really don't think that this is your problem though. I would be looking more at a sensor. Mass Air Flow sensor is the first that comes to mind, but some Nissans have problems with the IAC (Intake Air Control) sensor. Since the idle and air mixture are controlled by computer, the computer will try to compensate if it's getting the wrong signal. Of course, if a wire is off, well then... Let me know how this turns out.
