-----Question-----
I have a 2003 Nissan Xterra that was wrecked on the front drivers side. It has been repaired and runs and looks great, but the red air bag light is on. I am sure the sensor is probably bad and was not eplaced correctly when it was repaired from the wreck. I would like to know if there is a way to just unplug the warning light, or take out a fuse or something until I can get it fixed, so this bright RED light is not in my face all of the time.

Thank You very much for any info.

Randy,

The airbag circuit is telling you it is not working and the computer has turned the system off to avoid going off.  You could take the light out of the cluster.  But, if your airbags did not deploy in the wreck you probably only need the sensor on the front end.  Probably under $300 bucks to get it repaired and the light reset.

Thank you very much for your time. Until I get the $300, how do I get to the light to unplug it. Do I have to take the dash apart or is there somewhere with easier access for a temporary disconnect?

Answer
Randy,

If you want the light out you will have to remove the instrument cluster and take the bulb out.  Not too difficult on your truck.  You remove the two trim screws on the upper part of the cluster cover and then pull the trim forward and off.  There will be four screws holding the cluster in and after the screws are removed you disconnect the harness.  Turn the cluster over and look for which bulb is.  Remove the one from the airbag and you are set.  To check if you removed the correct one you will need hold the cluster up to a light and look in the hole where the bulb went.  Once you see the airbag lens you know you have found the correct one.  One thing to know here is the liability incurred by having an airbag system that does not function.  Unless you are driving around with a liability release form you could face litigation from anyone in your car if they are injured in a wreck that an airbag could have prevented.  Also, your insurance company might not cover their injuries or yours with the airbag not functioning.
