Nissan Repair: 1991 Maxima Clutch Problem, clutch master cylinder, clutch cylinder

Question
I checked all connections, master cylinder, slave cylinder. There were no leaks.  I totally rebled the system and did not see any air bubbles. There is still resistence to getting in gear, as it was before when it would refuse to go in gear after driving for a while.  I feel confident that the hydralic system has been cleared.  Any idea what internal problem this could be that would get worse as I drive? I appreciate your help.

Now I have replaced the master clutch cylinder and used the Ford fluid.  It seemed to work fine at first, but after driving for about 50 miles, the same problem returned. Currently, I cannot get it to shift into any gear with the car engine running.

My 1991 Maxima SE 5-speed has intermittent problems with shifting.  Frequently will not go into a gear when stopped until clutch pedal is "pumped" numerous times.  I have not noticed any leaks in clutch master or slave cylinders.

Michael,

If you are not leaking at the clutch master cylinder you most definately have a slave cylinder that has gone out.  Replace the slave and bleed the system and your car should be fine.

Replaced slave, bled system, still have same problem.  If I have car in gear with clutch depressed, I feel it grab very briefly as if the clutch pedal is being released.  I often have to turn ignition off to get gearshift to engage.  When it it at its worse, I cannot shift from one gear to another.  Can a bad throwout bearing have anything to do with this?

Michael,

Now, the master cylinder fo the clutch needs to be replaced.  The system will leak internallyand not leak on the ground.  Also, use Ford High Performance brake fluid as it will give you a better feel.

Michael,

Check the connections and make sure that they are tight and re-bleed the system.  If any air gets into the system it will cause the problem you are experiencing.  Both the slave and master are new or rebulit?  If they are rebuilt units check to see if they are leaking.  I have had rebuilds that fail shortly after installation.  So, pull the boot back on both and check for leaks if the tightening of the lines does not do the trick.

Answer
Michael,

You will have to drop the transmission to get to the throwout bearing to see if it is binding.  Also, the clutch/pressure plate could be going out and not releasing properly.  So, if the clutch master and slave are fine this is the next step.  If you have not replaced the clutch before now is the time.  I would go with factory components to include a clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bushing.
