Nissan Repair: 97 Maxima problems..., timing chain cover, nissan maxima

Question
Hi Von,

My car is a 1997 Nissan Maxima.

The dealership is telling me that my inner timing chain cover is leaking... and that if I don't get it fixed, it could cause a fire.

Is that accurate; what are the odds of that really happening? Any advice? (They want to fix it for $1400.00 -- which I don't have.)

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Rob,

If the engine is leaking oil on the front converters it would really have to pour to cause a fire.  I would not think so and have never heard of it.  But, if the cover is leaking I would get it corrected.  Now, there are other shops that will not charge near $1400 bucks.  Look for a Nissan speciality shop in your area.  And, if you are getting the timing cover seal replaced I would get a new water pump while you are at it.  If you are not doing the chain and only the cover $1400 bucks is way steep.
