Nissan Repair: Belt ripped off, nissan maxima, compressor unit

Question
I started my 99 nissan maxima and it started to smoke with a smell of rubber. I got my neighbor to look at it and he said my belt that is connected to my ac compressor unit melted off. This was due to the ac pump locking up and breaking down. He said he thinks that it may be connected with my alternator so I would need to replace it asap. I restarted the vehicle and it seems to be running fine. Is the belt thats connected with the ac pump connected with the alternator? I dont mind not having ac since its winter but I need my car for work asap. My neighbor said there's a way to bypass the acpump and getting a smaller belt to keep the alternator going. I need some guidance please! Help me if you can, thanks....

Answer
Robert,

You can get a smaller belt to bypass the airconditioner but you need to get the airconditioner replaced.  I would replace the compressor and dryer for now and not bother with charging the system for now.  Later, you can get the system charged.  But, it is good to have all the systems working.
