Dear Von,

Great job in helping out with their auto problems. I have to install ac compressor belt on Nissan Altima. Actually I had a mechanic replace it about 4 months ago but it blew up. One reason could be that he installed a bigger one than the specified size as he said he was not able to install the correct sized belt which I got from Pepboys. After he installed there used to be a squeking sound from the hood, but he said it happens some times and I left it there as the A/C was working fine and I heard the noice only some times and would go off if I remove my leg from gas pedal.

This time I want to do it myself. Infact I got a new belt from Orielly this time but couldn't replace it as it was tight. I tried to loosten the nut on the compressor pully but it was very very tight. Can you please give me details on how I can replace the belt myself.

Thanks in Advance!!!

Vijay,

The compressor should have a tensioner pulley that you can loosen the center bolt on.  Then, loosen the long bolt until the pulley lets the tension off.  If the center bolt is really tight you can use one wrench to add leverage on the other wrench or get a long breaker bar with a socket.  But, the center bolt has to be loosened or you will not get the pulley down to let the tension off the belt.

Answer
Vijay,

I hope that is not the compressor pulley?  If it is you have issues to deal with.  Anyway, there is supposed to be another pulley that provides the tension.  The pulley that is in the picture; is it the airconditioning pulley?  Let me know and email me back.  I checked out all three photographs.
