Nissan Repair: trouble starting and cuting off while idileing, nissan maxima, cold day

I have a 1995 nissan maxima 3.0 V6. My problem is when i get ready to start the car on a hot or cold day i have trouble getting it on. When i try to start it there is this strong gas smell coming from the car. It takes a while but when i finailly get it on and drive for a mile. The engine shuts off at a stop light and it will not come back on.

Sounds like it's flooding. The check engine should be on and if so we need to know what code is turning on the CEL. I suggest having your car scanned so we can get on the right track to making this repair. Cottman Transmissions will do this scan for free if you have one near you.
