Nissan Repair: Nissan 96 xe pickup, typwriter tapping, solenoid, xe

Hi!  We have a 1996 Nissan xe pickup, 4 cylinder with 118K miles.  All the belts, starter, radiator flush, tires, alignment and battery have all been done/replaced in the last year.  The truck runs great!  We have noticed lately though under the dashboard a typewriter tapping noise when we push on the gas peddle that has increased in sound in the last week and the check engine light just came on.  Do you have any ideas if the tapping sound and check engine light may be connected?

I'm not sure what the tapping is, it's likely a relay or solenoid, but that check engine light will give us a clue.

Have your truck scanned and let me know what the code number is. Try to get the "P" code if they will do that. Cottman Transmission will do this for free if there is one near you.
