Hello my Speedomiter stop working about two months ago I am wondering If it would be ok to purchase a speed sensor from a salavge yard or should I get one new. If you know a good place to buy one new(price driven)could you let me know.
Also now that the sensor has went out the car does not shift as smooth as it use to, hard shift from 1st to 2nd wondering if this is related to the speed sensor not working

thanks for the help

Hi Wiz,

You didn't tell me the year or model, but yes, absolutely, the speed sensor tells the computer how fast your car is going. I am shocked it shifts at all. That will also be why the check engine light is on. They are cheap enough to get a new one from the dealer. Some import after market places might have them for a little less.

My Make is a 1995 Pathfinder. About the transmission shifting the only difference that I've notice is from 1st to 2nd and that's only when it's cold. everything else seems ok. do you think it could be anything else? I will buy a sensor new. what would you estmate the labor should cost to install it. I live in Calif.

Thanks for the input.

Answer
You got it Wiz,

Sorry, they don't supply me with a part number on this truck. But it calls for .8 of an hour (48 Minutes). Here is the procedure:

Remove rear engine mounting member from side member while supporting A/T and transfer case with jack.
Lower A/T with transfer case as much as possible.
Remove revolution sensor from A/T.
Re-install any part removed.

Appears to be a six pack job. My experience tells me that the part should be less then $100. If you don't fix it you will spend $2500 to repair the transmission... Please replace the speed sensor as soon as possible...
