Nissan Repair: 1994 Nissan Pathfinder Transmission Problems, nissan pathfinder, torque converter

Question
I have a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder and my transmission went out on me yesterday driving out of the tollbooth. It was not slipping or gave any indication that there was a problem. I pulled off and it performed like my old bicycle when my chain would slip. The engine was running fine but the transmission would not engage. Is this a major repair or is it something simple? There was no fluid on the ground or evidence of fluid leaking. What should I check first to avoid a major expense in regard to getting to the root of the problem?

Answer
Maurice,

I would assume it is an automatic?  If it is and he fluid level is fine and the fluid is not burnt it is probably the torque converter.  And, that means that the transmission has to come out to replace it.  If you did not run the vehicle too far after the torque converter let loose there is a good possibility that the transmission would not be damaged internally.  And, if it were me I would do a rebuild while the transmission is out.  That is where they clean everything up inside and you would want this if the torque converter went out along with replacement of the clutches, bands and gaskets.  If it is not a four wheel drive you are looking at something like $1500 bucks.  I like Cottman since they have not taken advantage of me yet and have done many transmissions for me.  It is easier for me to send them out rather than doing it myself.
