Nissan Repair: Nissan pick-up...dim lights, a/c noise, compressor clutch, lighting problem

Question
Von,
My 97 Nissan pick-up, 4 cyl. std has two, probably unrelated issues. The head lights work, but are very dim, thus the vision at night is poor. Also the dash and license plate lights are dim. Local auto parts store checked the battery and alternator readings and they are in toleance. Any ideas?
Second issue is with the a/c. Works fine but the compressor seems to "cycle" on and off making a brief grinding noise. Is there any mainteance required or is something major on the way out?

Thanks,
Werner

Answer
Werner,

The headlight switch needs to be replaced to cure the lighting problem.

The compressor probably needs to have a can of refrigerant added to get the rapid cycling to slow down.  If the system is low or too high it will cycle on and off rapidly.  Also, if it is grinding when it applies you might be looking ar a replacement of the compressor clutch.  Look at the end of the airconditioning compressor and if the clutch looks like it has gotten white hot you will need to replace the clutch.  You did not say if it lugs the truck down so I am assuming the compressor is fine and it is only the clutch that is wearing out.  If the engine really was drug down by the airconditioning coming on you would need to replace the compressor and receiver dryer.
