Nissan Repair: 1994 Nissan Altima Clicking Noise, nissan altima, steering column

Question
We keep hearing a clicking noise coming from the steering column along with small puffs of smoke.  We had a coil replace in the column which seemed to solve the problem but within 2 weeks the clicking noise was back.  It sounds like the turn signal is on when it is not.  The smoke has not returned.  The dealership seems to be stumped on what to do.  Do you have any ideas?

Answer
Valerie,

Is the clicking noise there when the wheel is not turning or only when you turn the wheel each way?  If the noise is there when turning the wheel it is probably the coil for the airbag harness making the noise.  They could open it up and put some talc to eliminate chafing.  I have a 2000 Maxima that makes the noise and that cured mine.  If the noise is like a flasher noise then you have other problems that need to be diagnosed by taking the cover off the column and isolating it.  The dealer should know how to do this.
