Nissan Repair: Brakes Sticking, nissan sentra, speedy reply

Question
The problem first started i would say 3 months ago after i simply changed my brake pads and i could only get the caliper back on by releasing the pressure. I dont know if that could have caused anything. But i have just a few questions about the abs so i can have some info. Is there anyway for myself to check if the abs is indeed the problem or would have have to bring it to a shop? If that is the problem how much on average is it you replace or repair the abs module? What could have caused the abs to go bad? I would like to thank you for your help and speedy reply i really appreciate it.

I own a 2003 Nissan Sentra GXE. This problem has been going on for a little while now. When I drive my car for about 10 mins or enough to warm it up the brake on the front right passenger side seems to stick. The sticking is enough to slow the car down while driving. I get a smell of brakes and sometimes that side will have steam and smoke. When I come to a stop with the car in drive it does not move at all. It doesnt do it everytime I drive but most of the time it does and Sometimes while it is doing it, it just stops and goes back to normal. Also when I come to a stop the car shakes and I feel it in the brake pedal but only when the brakes are sticking. I dont think anything it warped because when I drive it when the problem doesnt occur everything works perfect. I recently changed the rotors, the brake pads, the caliper on the front right passenger side, and the brake hose on the front right passenger side. None of these seemed to fix anything. I dont know where the problem could be. I changed every part that someone said could possibly contribute to the problem. If you could give me any possibility of what the problem is or might be I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time, Brian

Brian,

The proportioning valve only gives bias from the front and back brakes.  So, if you have changed the caliper and the related hardware my bet is the ABS module is defective.  This is where all the brake lines go into a central location and from there out to each wheel.  Now, if the valves in the ABS hang up that would cause the one wheel to bind up.  I cannot think that you installed a defective caliper and it would be hanging up like the last one.  One other thing bears mention.  The brake line to that wheel is not crushed?  I mean the metal one that snakes through the frame as you already replaced the rubber hose to the caliper.

Answer
Brian,

The ABS module is a remove and replace procedure since it cannot be repaired unless you have the computer and tools to take it apart.  So, if we do a fault tree analysis of the condition you have replaced all the usual suspects.  So, lets go upstream.  The hard lines from the rubber hose that you replaced should not be crushed.  The caliper is not sticking.  Then, the only thing left is the ABS moduel since the other side is not sticking.  It is going to cost big bucks so I would go to the wrecking yard and try there first.  Now that you have one it is simply taking the old one off and putting the replacement in.  Do not cross thread any of the lines and make sure you disconnect the battery before you mess with it.  The ABS computer will set a code that you will have to have the dealership clear if you do.  Now, reconnect the battery adn bleed the brakes and the problem should be gone...
