Nissan Repair: remove timing chain cover, timing chain cover, nissan sentra

Question
how do you remove a timing chain cover on a 99 nissan sentra?

Answer
Ray,

The job is quite involved so be sure to get a manual that shows all the bolts.  Basically, remove all the accessories and jack up the car and take the passenger side front wheel off and the inner cover and the balancer and then start removing all the bolts on the cover and eventually you will get the cover off.  You will need to be Careful not to damage the cover when you pry the cover off.  It is good to get a thin scraper and work wound the side of the cover to keep from gouging the cover or warping or scratching the sealing surface.  I assume you need to change the chain so be sure to get a new chain and tensioner along with the guide to do the job correctly.  Get sensor safe silicone to reseal the cover and a new harmonic balancer seal and lube the snout with oil before you reinstall the balancer.  Change the oil since you might get old gasket material in the oil and it only takes a small piece of gasket can lock up the oil pump.  But, really, get a factory manual or go on line to nissan and for $20 bucks you can download the .pdf files for the job.
