Von,

I have a 95 Nissan Maixma.  I was not having any issues with the car but decided to install some new spark plugs (Auto Lite Double Platinum). The car started to misfire when I drove it in town.  It did not misfire on the highway.  I checked the gap on the plugs and they were OK.  I checked the resistance on the coils and they measured .585.  The engine has started to stall when idle.  Should installing NGK spark plugs correct the problem?

Ramiro,

You have a defective plug so I would take them back and get another set.  I ahve not had problems with autolites but NGK are a good replacement too.  Now, you did not loose one of the springs in the plug boot did you?  I have had that happen to me where the plug does not get good electrical contact since one of those springs fell out and there was no connection at idle.  Seems that when you run down the road the spark is enough to jump the gap and have the engine run normal.

Von,

I double checked each plug boot, they all have the springs.  I tried out the car and it is still stalling at idle.  I replaced the plugs with the NGKs it did not stall initially so I took it out for a test drive and everything OK, no misfiring.  When I was driving back home it stalled again at a stop.  The engine is also making a whistling noise when I don't rev it up.  I noticed that I had chipped a couple of the ends on the wire/boot where they connect to the coils. This happened when I installed the Autolites.  Could this be causing the stalling and whistling problem? The car was running fine before.  Thanx in advance for your help.

Answer
Ramiro,

Check the intake hose to the throttle body to make sure that it is not loose.  Also, it could cracked.  The whistle noise is a vacuum leak.  If there is a leak at the intake, a cracked vacuum line, that could cause the problem.  There are many sensors that rely on vacuum for signal and if the hose is off or cracked it could be causing the problem.
