Nissan Repair: Nissan Maxima not starting, neutral safety switch, engine cranks

Question
I have a 2002 Nissan Maxima. For a few day it has hesitated starting. Now when I try to start the car, it won't turn over but all my dash lights come on. After I try twice, it usually starts on the third time.

Answer
Shelly,

If the engine cranks slowly it would be the battery.  If it does not want to turn over at all and then on the third try it works try putting it in neutral and starting it.  If it starts up right away it is the neutral safety switch.  If not you need to have it checked for the charging system.  After you get it started go to Autozone or Checker and they will check the charging system for free.  If the charging system and battery check out replace the starter.
