Nissan Repair: Nissan Sentra service engine soon on after changing starter, nissan sentra, nissan cars

Question
Hello, Von:

Really admire your knowledge and expertise you have shown here. Recently my starter is out, and I had it changed. However, the "service engine soon" light keeps on ever since. I asked the mechanics and he said the engine is running well and nothing seems odd, so I should keep driving and wait till it went off someday. Is that a good advice?

By the way, I just had the oil change two weeks ago, and check the engine oil level, which is near high.

I would truly appreciate if you could offer some advice on this one. Thanks.

Answer
Howard,

Depending on your year the check engine light can be turned off at Autozone or Checker once they let you know what is going on to set the code.  If you have a 1992 or older a different scanner will be needed.  But, for most instances you can simply disconnect the battery for a few minutes and the computer will reset.  The oil level will not set the service engine soon light.  However, many Nissan cars have low oil sensors that will turn on a different light on the dash indicating such.
