Nissan Repair: 1994 Nissan Pathfinder ignition/electrical problem, nissan pathfinder, body control module

Question
Hi -

I have a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder with a manual transmission.  When I insert the key and try to turn it on, nothing happens (I do have the clutch engaged).  No dash lights come on, no radio - nothing.  I had the battery replaced, and the headlights and interior lights work fine.  The mechanic said it was likely a problem with the "ignition control switch".  He said the problem is that the ignition doesn't recognize when the key is being turned.

I have an alarm, and I made sure it was turned off.  I also tried a different key (not a new one - but one that hasn't been used very much).

Does it sound like a problem with the ignition switch?  Are these easy to replace?  What's the best manual?

I've never had any problems with the electrical system before this.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Scott,

When you turn the key to the on position does the fuel pump make noise like it is pressurizing the system?  If so, hot wire the starter to see if the starter will turn.  Basically, get a wire and touch it to the positive side of the battery and then get under the truck and touch the other end to the small terminal on the starter.  If the starter turns over then you know the ignition switch is defective or the key is not recognized by the body control module.  If it does not turn over then you have a defective starter.  Be sure to have the truck in neutral for this test.
