Nissan Repair: 84 Nissan 200sx alternator connections, nissan 200sx, alternator output

Question
My 200sx is having electrical symptoms (lurching under acceleration, brake warning and charge warning lights on continuously) and after reading your letters in this forum, I checked the alternator connections and one of them is clearly rusted/corroded.  The plug-in connection looks fine and protected from the elements, but there is another connection that looks vaguely like a rusted 'post'. I'm guessing that the connection wire has a washer-shaped end on it and the washer fits over the post and a nut tightens it down to make contact.  I don't see any other connections.  Could you tell me if there are more than 2 alternator connections, and what the post-connection is (ground?  positive current?) and whether trying to remove this connection by unscrewing what looks like a bolt is the proper way to remove the connection(don't want to make it worse)

thanks!

Answer
The corroded post is the positive connection and the other connection is the fields that are activated when the key is turned on.  The other post is a ground.  I would clean the connection and check the alternator output at the battery with the engine running at idle and at about 1200 rpms.  You should get something like 14.2 volts at 1200 rpms.  If not you are probably looking at an alternator replacement.
