95 altima wont start 100k miles, has 5 year old interstate batt. it would not jump start either. this was during real hot weather. the weather has cooled i was going to clean the connectors at batt, i thought i would just try to start it first an it started... i let it run 5min an tried to start it, it would not start... im confused now.  do i need a battery or a started or what? please help if ya can.  idid go ahead an clean the connectors any way.   thanks kenny

Kenny,  I REPLACED THE BATTERY, SAME PROBLEM, WHAT CAN I DO NEXT PLEASE?  THANKS  KENNY

My bet would be the battery along with the intermittent condition.  Yes, cleaning the connections is a plus and Interstate is the best battery out there.  But, a new battery is in order to baseline the electrical system.  With a known good battery you can chase other things later.

Kenny,

I TRIED THE NETURAL SAFTEY THING 12-15 TIMES I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THIS IS HOW OT DID START THAT ONE TIME - INTERMINTENT PROBLEM.-

If the starter neutral safety switch is not the problem I would check to see if you could hotwire from the battery to the starter terminal on the starter.  If it does not turn over then the starter is bad.  But, I would be checking the fuse block at the battery.

Answer
If the car will turn over touching a hot wire to the starter the starter is not defective.  There is something upstream that is causing the problem like the neutral safety switch or the ignition switch or the relay.  So, be sure that you check all of these before you install a starter.
