Nissan Repair: calipers longevity, infinity i30, performance friction

Question
Infinity I30 2000/4 door-I have only 51,000 on my car; I just had a brake job done on the rear brakes in February - at  my infinity dealer; I probably have traveled less than 5000 since then. All my maintenance has been done there according the schedule.  Today I took in for a 52,000 service and they told me that I need to have my calipers replaced on the back because one of them is rusting. How long are calipers supposed to last?  Wouldn't they have noticed the rust on my brake job in Feb?  They want to charge me $1600 and told me that if I go to other than an infinity dealer there will be problems with noise in the brakes and the quality will not be as good.  Can you help me please?

Answer
Jacki,

The price for calipers they are asking is way too high.  Basically, I would go to an independent and check prices with them.  I would not go to a chain as they are overpriced too.  Check a local shop and ask for the cost of rebuilt calipers and the install along with turning the rotors and a set of pads.  I would buy the factory pads as they do not make noise or a set of performance friction carbon metallic pads.  And, yes the calipes can screw up at any time with corrosion on the road.  Again, I would get that second opinion from an independent shop before I would go to the dealer.  Remember that the dealer is only for warranty work or for when there is something an independent cannot perform.
