Nissan Repair: shifter linkage assembly, nissan maxima se, nissan maxima

91 nissan maxima se 5 speed. my shifter suddenly got really sloppy yesterday. it will go into gear and stay but the shifter acts as if its not connected to the car. the shifter wants to over travel when placed in gear or when the accellerator is pressed. It's as if the shifter boot is the only thing keeping the shifter from falling through the floor. what do you think the problem and how to repair? first time this problem. Any help is appreciated; thank you.

The shifter assembly is for a front wheel drive model and I would bet the bushings have rotted out.  You will have to get a rebuild kit from Nissan or go to a wrecking yard to get another one.  Look under the car with it on jackstands and the wheels chocked and you will be able to see the assembly from there.
