Nissan Repair: Intermittent lighting of the brake+battery indicator, late model cars, light flickers

Question -
My 1996 Nissan Sentra - manual transmission - has developed this problem lately:
When running at speeds typically above about 35 mph,
the brake and battery indicator lights flash together rapidly. The only control I seem to have
over them is to engage the clutch fully. As soon
as I let go, the lights are back on and flashing.

It seems to be less frequent and lower speeds.

Couldn't find anything in the manual. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

SR,

Wiggle the parking brake handle and see if the light flickers.  If that does nothing then check the alternator for proper output.  If you still have problems email me back.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I had posted a follow-up, but it didn't
seem to make it to the list.

The brake-light seem to function well. Wiggling the hand-brake does
not seem to cause any flicker. While driving, I engaged the hand-brake
ever so sightly, an the braker light came on. It was only the battery
indicator that was now flickering.

I should also clarify my original post, that I have to disengage the
clutch completely for the flicker to go.

How do I check for alternator output? Would appreciate any tips.

thanks,

Answer
Shishir,

Go to aurozone or the like and they will check the battery and alternator output for free.  Also, check under the dash to see that the clutch switch is not grounding against anything.  The wires could be shorting and when you put the clutch in the short will go away and that turns the lights off.  many things in late model cars are wired to a common power source and this could be the cause of the problem.
