Answer
Patrick,

The alternator belt can be put back on by loosening the center bolt of the adjustable pulley that the belt runs on.  The alternator is one pulley and the crank is another pulley, as it were.  And, lastly the one that the belt goes around is the one that adjusts.  Now, some do not ahve this and the alternator is where the adjustment is made.  You did not tell me the kind of car so those are the two options.  There is a long tightening adjustment bolt that loosens and tightens the belt and then there is the center bolt on the pulley or the lock bolt on the alternator.  All you need to do is get it loose enough to get the belt abound all the pulleys and then tighten it up until you get an inch of play on the long side of the belt.  Then, tighten up the center bolt of the pulley or that lock bolt on the alternator.
