Nissan Repair: 2000 Infiniti I30, power steering fluid, demineralized water

Question
I have a 2000 Inifiniti I30 with 75k miles.  I asked the dealership if I should be thinking of a timing belt change, and they said it has a "chain" which does not require service.  Is this true?  Thanks, Ed

Answer
Ed,

Yes, you have a timing chain.  Actually, there are three chains.  Each head has a small chain that runs the two cams and then there is one that runs around both of the cam drives and this chain even drives the water pump.  Now, since you have a 2000 model I would have the alternator/airconditioning and power steering belt changed along with all the hoses since this is 2005.  I just changed the belts and hoses on a 2000 Maxima with the same kind of engine you have.  Also, if you have not had the brake fluid changed I would have it done with Ford High Performance Brake Fluid.  It is $5 bucks a pinit and it will take three to flush the system.  This is cheap insurance since brake components will deteroriate with old fluid and the Ford fluid has twice the boiling point of other DOT 3 brake fluid.  Remember to never use any synthetic or DOT 4 fluid in your Infiniti as it will trash the brake system.  Use the Ford fluid I recommend and you will love the results.  ALso, if you have not had the radiator antifreeze changed I would to that too and never allow anyone to back flush the system as it will take out your heater core over the long run.  Just drain it and fill it with a 50/50 mix of Prestone or the like and demineralized water.  Lastly, change out the power steering fluid and be sure to purchase the power steering fluid from Nissan or Infiniti as the aftermarket fluids are not as good.
