Nissan Repair: leak from ls axle seal, nissan altima, nissan maxima

Question
Hi,
I have a 2000 Nissan Altima GXE 5 speed with 160,000 km which has recently developed a leak from the driver's side axle seal area. I have replaced the seal within the last couple of weeks and it now leaks again. Apparently there is about 1/4inch of axle play at the inboard end of the shaft and  I suspect that there may be an internal problem causing the leak. I have heard that this may be a known problem on some Nissan Maxima and Altima and I am wondering what the best course of action is.  If repair involves a transmission tear-down should I consider doing other work at the same time ? Are the repairs something that a competent transmission shop should be able to do or should it be taken to the dealer ?

Thank in advance....
Hugh

Answer
Hugh,

The internal bearing is going out and the play is such that it takes the seal out with it.  Yes, the transmission will have to come out to replace the bearing.  Yes, it is a known problem and a good shop can correct it.  If you can get a Temkin bearing  as they are superior to most.  I would replace the other side while I were at it and if the clutch needs replacement now is a good time.
