Nissan Repair: 1987 300ZX, fuel pressure gauge, leaky injector

Question
DEAR SIR:
I HAVE A 87 300ZX 4 SPEED . WHAT IS HAPPENING IS THAT IT IS HARD TO START AND WHEN IT FIMALLY GETS GOING I HAVE TO FLOOR IT TO GET IT TO RUN AT APPROX. 400 RPM. THEN AFTER A ABOUT 1 OR 2 MINUTES I WILL REV UP THEN I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND THE WHOLE THING REPEATS. TILL IT WARMS UP THEN IT WILL IDLE. THEN AS YOU ARE DRIVING IT IT SEEMS LIKE IT IS BEING HELD BACK, IT FEELS LIKE A CLOGGED FUEL FILTER. IT HAS A NEW TIMING BELT, AND THE TIMING IS CORRECT. IT HAS A NEW MAF SENSOR, O2 SENSOR, AND CAT. THEN WHEN IT IS WARM AND YOU SHUT IT OFF IT WON'T START. THE STARTER WILL TURN THE MOTOR BUT I WILL NOT START UNTILL I COOLS DOWN. I KNOW IT'S A LOT OF STUFF BUT ANY INFORMATION YOU CAN GIVE ME WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
THANKS
JOE

Answer
It sounds like the temperature sensor for the engine is defective and the computer never goes into cold start mode.  This is where the engine gets the signal to run rich until the engine gets warm.  My bet would be to replace the sensor.  The second part sounds like you have a leaky injector and it is flooding the engine.  When you let it cool off the gas evaporates and you can start it.  I would do a leak check on the injectors.  To do this get a fuel pressure gauge and start the car and check the pressure.  When you turn the car of the pressure should hold.  If it drops off you have a leaky injector and you should change those that are leaking.  The easy way to see which ones are leaking is to pull the plugs.  The injectors that are leaking will really blacken up the plugs in repective cylinders.  Those that have good injectors will have normal looking plugs.
