Nissan Repair: Nissan front wheel bearings, front wheel bearings, brake rotor

Question
Thank you very much. Does the brake assembly need to be taken apart to look at the spindle? What do signs of overheating of the caliper look like. Can I rebuild it or is it specialty shop task?
Thanks
Bob

1987 Nissan pickup, short bed 4cyl. hardbody.
I heard some screeching in my left front wheel. When
I pulled off the grease cap I saw the axel off center in the wheel, and the bearing race collapsed.
The brakes went soft just then too, thought they work when pumped. Is the bearing something I can try in my front yard and parts store. I can't drive it to a shop to get the brakes fixed.

If the spindle has not been damaged you could purchase a new set of bearings, dust seal and rotor and pads.  If the spindle has been scored or has turned colors from being really hot you will have to replace it.  Check it out and make sure the spindle is in good condition.  If it has been damaged you will have to replace it since it could fail at a future date and that could cause the weel to lock up or fall off.  The brake fluid will have to be changed as it has been severely over heated from the bearing failure.  Check the caliper for signs of overheating as the seals could have been damaged from too much heat.

Answer
If the spindle is scored you will need to replace it.  you will know by simply taking the brake rotor off and checking the bearing race.  The inside one that is on the spindle will be stick on the spindle and if you can get it off without too much difficulty you should be fine.  On the caliper you can get a rebuild kit that comes with a new o-ring and outer seal and all you have to do is take yours apart and install the new components with brake fluid as a lubricant.  Do not use oil on the components.  You can do all this at the house as you will need a new rotor, brake pads and bearings.
