Hi Von, i have a nissan pathfinder 96, 108,000 miles, v6 3.0 ,my waterpump is leaking. how long before do you think it will go? I need to replace soon, i intend to replace myself, what do i need to remove to get to waterpump ? thank you
Answer -
A pump and a gasket are required for the change.  And, since it is so much fun to change I would go with a factory pump so you will not have to do it for another 108K miles.

Hi Von, can you guide me through step by step directions what to remove to get to waterpump. Is it a difficult task or am i going to have alot of fun.
your answer will greatly be appreciated. thanks ak.

Answer
I am going to do this from memory so I am sure I will miss something.  But, here it goes.

1.  Disconnect the battery cable

2.  Take the top of the fan shroud off.  Bolts on top and a couple on each side.  The shroud is split so the top part comes off.

3.  Take the fan off and belt that drives it.

4.  Drain the coolant and save it if it is not over two years old.

5.  Remove the pump and scrape the gasket material off the engine block.

6.  Use 3M superweatherstrip adhesive to place the new gasket for the waterpump.

7.  Make sure the bolts are clean and use Permatex #2 sealant and dab each bolt before installing the new waterpump.

8.  Install the waterpump and tighten the bolts to 16 pound feet of torque.  If you do not have a torque wrench just tighten it by hand but not too tight.

9.  It might be a good time to replace the belts and hoses since you are already there and I would go with factory ones.

10.  Replace the fan and the shroud.  Replace the coolant and you need to hook up the battery.

11.  Burp the engine by running it to operating temperature and topping the radiator off.  Be sure to use a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled or demineralized water.
