Nissan Repair: Gear shifting, nissan maxima se, nissan maxima

Question
This is regarding a 94 Nissan Maxima SE - Automatic Transmission

When I start from a complete stop and while I am accelerating, the RPM needle revs up as though I am driving in the 1st gear without shifting up until I let go of the gas. As soon as I let go of the gas, the transmission seems to shifht up and thereafter the ride is smooth

It appears as though the transmission has a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd while 2nd to 3rd and so forth may be fine. Is this the case ?

Would like to get an opinion on what the problem could be and how much extensive repair job this would be.

Answer
It sounds like second gear is going out on your transmission.  First thing is to see if the fluid is burnt and the second is to check to see if there is an adjustment for the second gear band.  I do not know if you are mechanically adept at working on your car?  If you are get a factory service manual and look up the procedure to see if it is possible to adjust the band on your second gear.  If there is no provision you are going to need to get the transmission rebuilt.  I have not personally worked on your year model.  But, there are many that have adjustments.  Now, even if yours does have the provision to tighten up the second gear friction material you might be too far gone to make a difference.  Remember you have a 94 and after ten years your transmission is really past due for a rebuild.  I would recommend Cottman since I have had luck with them in two different states.  I cannot say the same for other national chains that I have used.  If you want to do it on the cheap there is the option of purchasing a wrecking yard transmission and making the change yourself.
