Nissan Repair: gear shifter, neutral safety switch, sentra

Question
my automatic shifter on my 93 sentra gets very hard to move into park, after driving{it doesn't always happen- no telling when it will}  I don't want to break anything, and would prefer to fix it myself.  Is this a very difficult job?

Answer
Your car is equipt with a cable shifter and the cable is probably bound up and needs grease or a replacement.  I do not know if you live where is snows but if you do it could be rusted up and that would require replacement.  The easiest way it to open the hood and put the parking brake on.  Then have someone move the shifter from park to drive 1 and back and fourth until you can see where the shifter connects to the transmission.  This is on the driver's side and it is on top where you can see it so you will not have to get under the car to observe the shifter movement.  You can start by spraying lubricant on the shifter mechanism.  This is under the hood where the cable moves the shift quadrant on the transmission.  Also, there is a remote possibility that the neutral safety switch could be dragging.  Not too probable as you did not mention the car having difficulty starting.  If the car was in park and would not start unless you wiggle the shifter is the way you know if the neutral safety switch is going out.
