Answer
I assume it is an automatic?  If this is the case check the fluid to make sure that it is full.  To do this run the engine until it is warm.  On a flat surface, with the car running in park pull the transmission dipstick and wipe it off.  Then re-insert it and pull it out.  Check the level and add accordingly.  Do not overfill it as it will hurt the transmission if it is too full or not full enough.  If the transmission is full and the fluid is not burnt you probably have a broken torque converter.  It would require a rebuild of part of the transmission.  it is cheaper than if the transmission was slipping for a time and you kept driving it.  That would cause many parts inside the transmission to get burnt requiring replacement.  Check the fluid and see if it is full.  If it was really low it could cause your problem.  By filling it you could solve the problem.  Again, if it was full before you checked it and it was slipping you probably have a bad torque converter.  Lastly, you did not say if the shift lever was loose.  In rare occasions the shift linkage has broken in park and this would not let the transmission shift.  Let me know what you find.
