Nissan Repair: Altima ignition switch, electrical functions, altima

Question
Hi Darrel,
A while back, I began having difficulty starting my '93 Altima. I would have to turn the key farther than usual for it to crank, and then I'd have to turn it back just slightly for any of the electrical functions to work. Once the car starts, though, it runs just fine. Now I have to turn the key REALLY hard. I tried re-keying, but that didn't work, and I haven't yet found a mechanic or locksmith who doesn't seem puzzled by what's happening. I need to have the car inspected, but I'm sure it won't pass like this. I'm thinking the entire ignition assembly needs to be replaced. Just wanting to know if that sounds likely, if replacement's something I'd have to go to the dealer for, and the approximate amount a repair like this should cost (assuming I already have the part). Thanks!

Mia

Answer
Yes Mia, you will need a new one.  But the ignition should have nothing to do with passing inspections.

I could give an estimate, but that is not my field.  I wouldn't want to give you an estimate.  For my estimate could be different because of the area I live in, verses your area.

Good luck
