Nissan Repair: Windshield Wiper Linkage, windshield wiper arm, nissan sentra

Question
Hi Darrel,
The driver side wiper doesn't move (1997 Nissan Sentra) The linkage that hooks from the driver side to the passenger side looks like it dropped off the connection. It looks like a bushing or that connection has either worn out or has slid off. Is it just a matter of getting a new bushing or a whole new arm? It does't appear that the arm is bent or broken, just came off the driveshaft, if I may call it that. It appears that the motor must be on the passenger side. I am assuming there is only one motor. Would a NAPA or PEPBOYS be of any help, or is this strictly a dealer type part? I think I can fix this myself or am I wrong? Any special tools needed? Thanks so much for your help in advance, Darrel.

Answer
Hi Jerry,

You are right Jerry there is only one motor and yes it is on the passager side.
Yes, you should be able to fix it yourself, as long as you have time and patience.  You know how things go.

I have never heard of a windshield wiper having a "Bushing".
There are no specials tools needed for this (none that I know of)
Pull the windshield wiper arm off, then look inside the hole that the shaft fits in.  There should be grooves inside the hole, if those grooves are smooth then the arm is no good.

Second thing to check, is shaft that the arm sits on.  There should be the same grooves that sit on that shaft, if those are smooth then it is also no good.

You will have to replace the shaft.  I believe they come in a set of two.  Not for sure, I personally haven't had to replace it.

NAPA or PEPBOYS should have it, you can also check Kragens or AutoZone if you have one.  Check with the dealer also, but it will probably be a higher price.
