Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Valve Cover Gaskets, upper intake manifold, buick lesabre

Question
Dear Sir,

Year: 2000
Make: Buick Lesabre
Engine: 3.8
Mileage: 163339

The technician told me that my car has oil leak and need to replace the Valve Cover Gaskets. The last time I changed engine oil was 4200 miles ago, and 5 quarters oil are almost used up now. Is it really a problem? Do I have to replace it?

The cost is $340 totally. Is it reasonable?

Thank you so much for your answer!

Sincerely,
Zixin Wu

Answer
Hi
5 qts in 4200 mile is VERY excessive. You will have pretty large oil pudles under car. Do you?
IF so then I have seen valve cover gaskets leak, but not that badly.
I would suspect possibly multiple leaks, IF you have oil leaking/dripping on ground.
If you DO not have it, I would suspect an internal engine oil usage problem. PCV valve comes to mind. Also upper intake manifold seals (gaskets) leaking internally.
If in doubt, get a second opinion.
$340  sounds close, depending on the labor rate in YOUR area.
I Hope this helps
Good Luck
God Bless
