Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: gas guage on a Buick, fuel level sensor, 2000 buick lesabre

Question
Hi. I'm considering buying a 2000 Buick Lesabre. 3.8 motor. I noticed after the test drive the gas gauge was bouncing back and forth. What are the possible problems and is it expensive to fix? Thanks!

Answer
Hi
The most LIKELY cause of this problem is the fuel level sensor, located inside the tank.
Cost.... I would guess parts to be in the $100-$150 USD range (Thats a GM or Delco part, not sure if avalible aftermarket).
Labor SHOULD be in the 2 hour range (depending on labor rate in your area). The top of tank is accessible from inside the trunk.
I hope this helps
