Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 2000 Buick Lesabre Transmission, torque converter clutch, worst case scenario

Question
125000 miles 3.8 liter engine

Transmission seems to jump back and forth between gears when going up a grade.  Have heard this may be a torque converter problem. Has been suggested to unplug the converter.

All info would be appreciated including approx cost for shop to repair if it is converter.

Thank you...bob

Answer
Hi
I would advice first for you to drive it with the gear selector in 3 (aka manual third). This will keep the car from going into 4th gear or overdrive, which in turn will keep it from TCC (Torque Converter Clutch Lock up).
If problem goes away, I would then consider 2 things.
1) just putting it in 3rd when going up grade.
2) Taking it to a good repair shop and having it properly diagnosed. It PROBABALLY is not the converter itself, MAY just be the TCC Solonoid or related wiring. This data can be viewed on a scan tool while driving. With line pressure tapped and scan tool a good drivability technician SHOULD be able to pinpoint trouble quickly and properly.
This is my advice
Cost..... I am not real sure on the price of converters. Good remaned converters are avalible.
Worst case scenario I would GUESS in the $1500 range...depending on exactly what is found. Justa  guess.
I hope this helps
Good Luck
