Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: intermittent failure to start., crankshaft position sensor, security light

Question
QUESTION: I have a '96 LeSabre with 80,000 miles. The last several weeks about once a week it will not start. Then after several minutes and several tries it will start and then not fail for several days. Any clues?

ANSWER: Hi
Is the security light on? Is it blinking?
Have the PCM scanned for codes.
The security system will store codes.
Answer back, if possible.

QUESTION: I took it to an ASE mech, he never got it to duplicate the problem, he ran the PCM scan there was nothing there. I now have the beast back home and am hoping for the best.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Answer
Hi
AS long as the security light is not on... I would venture a few items..
1) The CKP (Crankshaft Position sensor).it will make one act similar to this.
2)The Cam button magnet. Have them remove the CMP (Camshaft position sensor) and see if the magnet is still mounted securly to the cam pulley.
3) The wiring between the CMP/CKP and the ignition control module (ICM). It gets HOT and brittle and MAY short together causing like symptoms.
These are 3 items that will cause your problem WITHOUT illuminating the Service engine soon light or store codes.
I hope this helps.
Good luck
